blog a day challenge: c…

C is for conversation…

My goblins are hilarious. To me at least. I have a 5 year old girl and an almost 4 year old boy (they’re 19 months apart). I try my hardest to record the funny things they say because, well frankly, I know that someday they will grow up and be mouthier, sassier buggars with attitudes that drive me crazy… and I want to remember the good times, the innocent times, the times when they had me rolling with laughter.

(For those of you finding me through the A-Z challenge, this isn’t a “mom blog”, it’s a me blog. Mostly, I post poems and stories, but I also post all of the other random bits of my life. I hope you explore the blog a little and enjoy!)

Now, without further ado, my goblins!

Cole, “Jenna! Leave my brain there okay. (sets something down) I don’t want you to touch it because it’s my brain.
Me, “Cole, what are you talking about?”
Cole, “That’s my brain from when I was a baby.”
Me, “You have the same brain, buddy. It’s in your head and it’s what makes you think.”
Cole, “Yeah! I don’t want Jenna touching my brain, it’s squishy and she might break it. So she has to not put her fingers in my head.”
Me, *stares and blinks*

Jenna to Cole, “Can you just stay with me here so I don’t think about bears?”

Jenna at Arby’s, “How do you get horsey sauce from horses?”

Watching the Voice with the kiddos:

Jenna, “Mom, are those girls going to fight in dresses?”
Me, “What?!”
Jenna, “Well, they are in a fighting place with the ropes in the thing like this (motions with her hands), but they are in pretty dresses.”
Cole (interrupting), “I really like Christina.”
Me, “Oh yeah?”
Cole, “Yeah! I even know her name and she’s sooooo pretty.”

Cole sleepwalks and talks in his sleep… and that’s the set up you need for this one.

Cole, “Mom! I think I fed my feet and the dog at the door. Okay?”
Me, “Coley, I think you’re sleeping bud.”
Cole, “Oh, is there a banana in the bathroom?”
Me, “I don’t think so. Time to go back to bed.”
Cole, “I want my sandwich.”
Me, *tucks Cole back in and walks slowly away”

Jenna, “Mom! Look at me! I look super pretty.”
I look over and she’s wearing my black, patent leather, heeled boots and my fedora.
Me, “You always look pretty, Jenna.”
Jenna,” Yeah, but right now I look like a model!”

Cole, “I want my blankie!”
Me, “Go get it.”
Cole, “I can’t with the light off… it’s so spoooooky!”

Cole, “It’s a CHIWADDA!”
Me, “Cole, what’s a Chiwadda?”
Cole, “They are like a monkey. They’re orange. They’re big, but some are little. The big ones are parents, and the little ones are kids. They say ooo ooo ah ah! I saw one stand on two feet, so they stand up really tall.”
Jenna, “Also, yesterday, he said they have butterfly wings!”

Jenna: “Mommy! Mommy! Mommy! (Running all the way from her bedroom) Mommy! Cole and I figured out a habitat! People live in houses!” (runs away)
a few minutes later…
Jenna: “Mommy! Mommy! Mommy! Cole figured out another habitat! Fish live in the water!

Cole, “Do you know why the sun turns colors?”
Me, “Nope! Tell me?”
Cole, “It’s because he changed his mind. The sun’s colors come out of his face!”

Cole, “I keep my friends in jars!”
Me, “Um, why?”
Cole, “Oh! They’re just fairies. It’s where they go. I keep Jenna’s friends in jars too.”

Jenna while eating a gummy frog,  “No! No! Don’t eat me! I want to live! I don’t want to be in your tummy. Nooooooo…”
Jenna: *Achoo, achoo, achoo!*
Cole: “Jenna, are you okay?”
Jenna: “Yeah, I just blessed.”
Cole: “Oh, excuse you!”
Jenna: “No, I bless youed not burped.”
Cole: “Oh, bless you, Jenna!”

Me: “Jenna, I need you to hurry. If we don’t get moving, we are going to miss happy hour at Sonic. It’s almost over.”
(Jenna and I drive to Sonic and pick up drinks…)
After arriving home, Jenna: “Mom, is Sonic sad now?”
Me: “What? Oh! Because happy hour is over?”
Jenna: “Yes.”
Me: “Yes, Jenna. Sonic is very sad now.”

(So, this happened an hour or so after I made this post, of course. I decided to add it in)
Jenna, “Welcome to heaven!”
Cole, “No! I don’t want this to be heaven!”
Jenna, “Well, it is.”
Cole, “But if I’m in heaven I’m dead, and I don’t want to be dead, Jenna!”
Jenna, “Yep, you’re dead. Sorry. You just are.”
Cole, “Okay, I’m dead and I’m a ghost and I’m going to eat you!”
Jenna, “No! There aren’t ghosts in heaven!”
Cole, “Yes they are! I’m a ghost in heaven and I’m going to eat you!”
Jenna, “No, Coley! You can’t! Ghosts are people and people can’t eat people!”
Cole, “I ate you! You’re in my stomach now!”
Jenna, “You are ruining everything!”

my oldest goblin turns five…

I have a daughter named Jenna and this month she turned 5! For a good chunk of her life, I’ve been concerned that she and I may not have much to connect on as she got older. The girl is all pink, frills, and lace, and I, well, I am not. However, several months ago while I was watching Star Wars and cleaning, Jenna joined me. She sat down, watched the entire first movie with me, and then asked for more. We watched all three in a row without her getting antsy, and at the end she told me Star Wars was her new favorite movie. That was probably six months ago, and at the time she asked me if she could have a Darth Vader cake for her birthday, I said yes and figured she would change her mind. She didn’t! Nope, not at all. My little girl decided she wanted a Star Wars party with a Darth Vader cake and princess candles. She knows what she likes, and I love that she and I have something that we can enjoy together!

My friend Andrea and I always make my kids’ cakes, and we were trying to figure out how to manage a Darth Vader cake and Star Wars themed treats. We decided on lightsaber cake pops, and a sheet cake with Vader’s head drawn on it with a powdered sugar outline and piping gel filling it in. The cake pops were strawberry cake covered in semi-sweet chocolate and red sprinkles. The cake was chocolate on chocolate.

For a game, we played pin the tail on the At-At. Only instead of a normal At-At, we used At-Ore from Wookiee the Chew by James Hance.

We also had a Darth Vader pinata that we let the kids hit with inflatable (as not to damage their little kid noggins) lightsabers. Then, we had Jenna pull the ribbon at the bottom to let all the candy out.

After the pinata fun was had, the empty shell made a pretty great mask. The kids tried it on and played with their Chinese yo-yo lightsabers and their inflatable lightsabers. After the kids were done having their fun, some of the adults decided to get in on the action as well.

This was the first year that Jenna didn’t mind being the center of attention while people sang to her and she blew out her candles. In fact, I would say she ate up everyone paying attention just to her. Part of me thinks that it was because she was having so much fun with a party she had been planning for so long that involved one of her favorite things. I asked her what part of the cake she wanted, and she said, “Darth Vader’s FACE!” She settled for part of her name though so that she could have the first piece.

After cake Jenna opened presents. She received quite the haul of Star Wars themed gifts, some pretty sweet Legos (that she began putting together and playing with pretty much as soon as guests began to leave), and several other neat things that she’s been hiding from her brother and playing with ever since she opened them. I think overall the party was a success and that everyone had a good time. I know for sure that Jenna was thrilled with how her Star Wars party turned out!

After everyone was gone, the kids and I posed in our Star Wars shirts. Andrea found the kids’ shirts at Old Navy, and then she added a pink band around the neck, wrists, and bottom of Jenna’s shirt to fit my little girl’s personality just a bit better.

This is Jenna today dressed up as Vader and wearing a shirt that our friend Kevin made for her featuring her second favorite thing in Star Wars: a stormtrooper. She was running around the house playing, and when I saw her, I made her run out the front door so I could snap a quick picture of her. Finally, This is a picture of me as Darth Vader… because, although I wore my hair in Leia braids at my daughter’s request, I’m really more in tune with the Dark Side of the force.

an everything kind of post…

It has been a long summer. In a strange way staying as busy as we’ve stayed has made it even longer. Every week has been an adventure, which means I’ve been neglecting my poor blog as well as a few other things. I have craft projects just sitting woefully neglected while I have been outside running around. Weekend hikes and street market visits have been reminding me why I like fresh air. That means that my WoW subscription went from active to inactive without me really even noticing. I’ve traded in carrying my computer with me everywhere to carrying my CamelBak and a Moleskine or four. It’s been nice, refreshing. However, I know it won’t last. Pretty soon it will get bitter cold and I’ll be back to gaming and couch sitting.

Speaking of Moleskines, mine are getting a lot of use. They mostly contain bad poetry, but there is one that is an idea book for a new story I’m working on and another that is filling up with storyboards for a future comic.

Even writing has been taking a bit of a back seat. Fun writing at least. I took my first official job doing some copy writing for a friend/designer. It was enjoyable. More enjoyable than I expected actually.

It is a little strange to think about fall. This time next year, I’ll be sending Jenna off to school. I can tell you that she wishes that she didn’t have to wait another whole year. I have promised her this year will be fun though. I’m going to suck it up and take her to a football game or two very soon to (/sigh) watch the cheerleaders.

Cole is now three and obsessed with Spiderman. I wish he had been a little more discerning in his superhero tastes, but what can you do? Yesterday he was playing Spiderman the pirate dinosaur. You may think I’m kidding, but he was roaring pirate phrases, stomping, and shooting webs all at the same time. He’s crazy.

This week is vacation week. Soon I will be sitting somewhere not at home and hopefully that means more time for blogging and other writerly pursuits. I’ll let you know how it goes!

fluff piece #9: a make up post…

This fluff piece comes to you via a story time I had with my kids. I asked them a bunch of questions and worked their answers into an outline I’d created beforehand. It was almost a mad lib, but not quite. I wanted more freedom with the story than that. Also, I think this counts quite well as a make up piece for last week because this was created last week, I just didn’t post it. In fact, I never planned on posting it, but I think it is fun and I needed something to cover my grievous error of not posting, so here it is.

Once upon a time there was a beautiful princess and a very big dragon. The princess liked to play in the flowers with her best friend, the dragon, but one day the dragon did not come to play. When the princess got to the flowers to look for her friend, all she found was a note. The note said, “My dear friend the princess, I have gone off to pursue a life as a pirate. I will miss you, but I must do what I must do and a pirate is what I must be.” The princess was very sad. For days she sat in her room and stared off at the flowers hoping to see her friend frolicking back through them, but, alas, that did not occur. Finally, the princess got tired of sitting and playing with her books, video games, and dolls. She got up, put on a pretty dress, and went looking for the dragon.

Meanwhile, on a pirate ship, the dragon was feeling lonely. He enjoyed being a pirate and riding around on a boat, but he missed his best friend. He had collected a large treasure chest full of gold doubloons, but with no one to share them with, they did not seem very exciting. All of his adventures running from crocodiles and dinosaurs meant even less because he had no one to talk about them with. He may be what he had always wanted to be, but he still missed playing in the flowers.

Just as the dragon was getting ready to flap his wings and fly away from the pirates and his pirate ship, he saw a little boat coming through the water. He squinted his big dragon eyes and saw that it was the princess rowing toward him! She was on a pink and purple boat that matched her pink and purple dress. also, she was carrying a big, ruffled, pink and purple umbrella. The dragon was so excited he could not contain himself! He flapped his wings and flew straight up into the air. Then he let out a loud, “RAWR!” Followed by a big billow of smoke and fire. The princess squealed with delight when she saw her friend and called out to him, “Fly over here and get me you silly, silly dragon!”

The dragon and the princess both decided to be pirates. They got on the pirate ship and sailed off to find more treasure because treasure is fun to find. However, every now and then, they still went back to the flowers to play. Not just because they liked to play in the flowers, but also because that is where they buried their treasure chest.

my hat and a birthday cowl…

I finally finished the BSU hat that I was working on a few weeks ago. After I finished it, however, I went on vacation and forgot to post some pictures. First, here are the last couple of pictures that I took on the needles. (Cole was a helpful model…)

And here are a bunch of pictures of Jenna pretending to be America’s Next Top Model. Oy vey… I did ask her to model my hat for me along with a scarf I made for a friend, so I guess she was just following instructions. Very literally.

(And my favorites… Gigantic because I’m her mother and this is my blog and if I want them to be big I can make them so.)

Finally, this is a moebius cowl that I made for my sister’s 30th birthday. It is 100% wool knit on US size 13 circulars. I’m pleased with the way it came out. The rows are k2, p1, k2, p2, k1, p2 and repeat. It’s cozy and I’m hoping that it will work well under the wool pea coats my sister is so fond of wearing. It will certainly look better with one of them than with my Giants sweatshirt.
