bleed blue…

For those of you that don’t know, I’m a huge Boise State Broncos fan. I love me some college football, and I’ve wanted to go see the boys on the blue for a very long time. In an amazing twist of fate, one of my friends ended up with some free tickets to the game and, knowing that it was one of the things on my bucket list, he offered me one! I was blown away and so excited for the opportunity.

Pretty much, it was amazing. The crowd was extremely loud and energized from the first second to the last. Even though we lost, I had a blast. It was an amazing night, and I am so thankful for good friends helping me mark another thing off my bucket list!

bucket lists and father’s day…

I went on a trip to Seattle! That isn’t that unusual for me. I go there sometimes. This time, going meant crossing two things off of my bucket list.

This blog is about the first thing: I went to a baseball game with my dad. This may not sound like a huge thing, well, it may not unless you know the whole story.

My dad is a baseball fanatic. To be slightly more specific, he’s a San Francisco Giants fanatic. My daddy taught me to play baseball. He coached little league for me, he played a never ending game of double or nothing involving pop flies with me, and took me to my very first professional baseball game.

Daddy and me in SF.

We went to see the Giants play in the city, we went early and hung out around the dugout, and my dad talked me out of being shy and into getting signatures on my mitt. In short, my dad taught me to love baseball, to love the Giants, and to be almost as happy about a Dodger loss as about a Giants win.

Then, my dad had a heart attack. It was out of the blue. I’m sure most people say that, but this really felt it. He was in good shape, he wasn’t overweight, and he ate a healthy diet. For more on all of that, you can visit the post I wrote about it. While he was in the hospital I did two things to keep myself sane, I wore his watch everywhere, and I added to my bucket list going to another Giants game with my dad. I wasn’t entirely sure it would happen, but I had to believe it.

And on Sunday the 17th of June this year (2012), I went to a Giants game with my dad. Sure, it was in Seattle, but the Giants were playing, and that is what matters! I wish I could say we won, but the Ms got us. However, it was a brilliant game. It came down to the last inning, the last few seconds. It was crazy, good. It would have been better if the Giants had won or the Dodgers had lost (they totally won that day too, the jerks), but I was at a giants game with my daddy, and I’m so glad I get to cross that off my bucket list.

After the game. See the sadness in our eyes? Yeah…

Before the game… happier campers.

football and silence…

I am a sports fan. Actually, fan may be putting it lightly. When it is baseball or NCAA football season, I spend a good chunk of time sitting in front of a television or computer screen hyperventilating. My heart beat quickens, my stress level rises, I feel a sense of dread mixed with euphoria that I cannot easily explain. Why am I telling you this? Well, I want you to know how much sports mean to me. I want you to know where I come from when I write this…

I could not be happier that Joe Paterno lost his job at Penn State.

When news first broke that he had been let go, I felt a sense of sadness for the man. His coaching career has been remarkable. The students at his school clearly love him.  It is an absolute shame that this is how things are ending.

That being said, a man that used to work under him is currently being prosecuted for 40 counts of molestation and rape against male children. Let that sink in for a second. I’ve heard that number many times today, and typing it just now, I still feel ill. It’s true that Paterno himself did not do anything to physically hurt any of these boys, but the question remains: Why did he not react in a more vehement manner? After he was informed of the situation, how could he continue to allow such a disgusting abuser to walk in and out of his locker room?

I would like to introduce you all to my friend Matt. I went to high school with him. Matt is one amazing guy. When he was young, he was molested by a close family friend. For years he was silent, however, recently he has been speaking out. He is the founder of a nonprofit organization called Commit 65 that is raising awareness for victims of child molestation. Matt’s motto is “Speak your silence!” It is a great motto, to be sure, but I would like to add to it. In many instances, there are those of us who should take on the motto “Speak THEIR silence“. Giving those that have been made victims by such a terrible crime a voice is an amazing gift. If Paterno had made himself heard, if he had spoken the silence of the boys being abused right under his nose, maybe a serial molester would have been stopped. Maybe the numbers would be smaller than the disturbing 40 counts.

Now I would like to introduce you to somebody that I love more than I can say. I would like you to meet my mother, Lois. She is a beautiful, strong woman. I aspire to be to my children what she has been to me. When I was younger, I learned that my mom was a victim of childhood molestation. She was abused by a family member and has lived with the pain of what she went through with a dignity that I am awed by. My mother should not have to live with the scars that were given to her as a child, no person should have to, but they do. Every day. So many people are quietly going about their lives feeling alone when they don’t have to.

Matt and my mom were given a voice. They were given the power to speak. Their silence is no more, and I am so proud to know both of them. There is no shame in being the victim of a crime. No person should feel like what was forced on them by an abuser was their fault or something to hide. If you’ve been the victim of molestation, I encourage you to find someone you trust and speak your silence! If you know of someone that is abusing children, speak the silence of the innocent. Stand up, make it known, and make sure it ends.

By speaking up and founding Commit 65, I am positive that Matt is going to change the world. If you can help him with his crusade, I urge you to do so.

new season…

Oh my Giants. Settle down! You guys can do this, you can. You can have a great follow up season! Most of the time, you are looking pretty steady, but it just seems like you are all hung up on something. Take deep breaths, play good baseball, keep being awesome! I’m going to try and come visit you, so win! Win so that when I come it is that much more exciting. Yep.

Seriously though, I may go to Stitch N’ Pitch this year. There aren’t definite plans yet, but I’m thinking it could be pretty cool!

my happy place…

Lately my blood pressure has been slightly raised. This has lead to me to spend a lot of time going to my various happy places…

Baseball season is upon us and that means not only an entire year of saying that my Giants are the WORLD SERIES CHAMPIONS! It also means that Brian Wilson is showing up all over the place again. That man is seriously insane and seriously dreamy. I was never the girl with a million celebrity crushes, but I can honestly say that I have a giant, old-fashioned, school girl, crush on this particular baseball player. *swoon*

I’ve finished my first fingerless glove. It is cute, but I did the binding off too tightly so I’ll have to take it out and try again. I think the rest of it will fit well though, and even if it doesn’t I have plenty of yarn to start over and make two slightly bigger ones. I’m excited for how they look though. The yarn is so soft and knits up beautifully. Someday I’ll take some pictures of my latest knitting projects and do a giant picture dump post, but for now, you’ll just have to take my word for it. After I figure out the problem with my mitts, I’m going to cast on a hat for myself. I bought some pretty yarn with a birthday gift certificate from last year and I’ve been needing a new hat for quite some time.

I’m working on a new comic. It’s official. as soon as I can figure out the logistics of getting the art done, I will once again have something that I publish on the internet that I feel good about. Anyhow, I’m hoping to have it up and going in the next few months and I’ll keep you guys posted. In the meantime, I’m scripting and loving it!

It seems that it is about time for me to go comic shopping again. I’m reading one that my friend Kevin loaned me, but I want another Buffy and another Scott Pilgrim. On another note, being out of comics means that I have been reading books. I’m almost done with one, and as soon as I am, I’ll post something long and boring about it, and then I will start Neverwhere. I’m pretty excited about that, actually. Maybe today will be spent reading one book so that I can get to another!

I wrote a bit on another writing prompt the other day. I’ll finish that at some point this week and get it posted. (Read with sarcasm, please.) I know you all live for my bits and pieces of literary genius, so I thought I would give you something to look forward to. But seriously, I enjoy posting things on here that are fictitious and just fun for me to create, and I hope you enjoy reading them.

Finally, I must say goodbye in order to go do my daily quests and get the reputation I need with a couple of different factions so that my gear can suck a little less and I can be slightly more adamant about my awesomeness in WoW when stupid people try to correct my game play. Yeah, that’s about all I have to say about that… for now anyway.
