nightmare fuel 2012…

It’s October! I happen to really love this time of year. When I was little, I wasn’t allowed to trick-or-treat or participate in many Halloween type activities. My family opted for harvest parties and non-spooky costumes. (Which I’m totally fine with, by the way. My parents were good parents and awesome people and they made what they thought were the best decisions for me in my childhood, and I respect that.) So, I’m not sure if it is repressed childish glee seeping out, or if I would have been just as enthusiastic for the season had I been a Halloween participant as a child as well, but I do know that I am a Halloween fan.

Last year I participated in something called Nightmare Fuel. I posted my contributions to Tumblr in order to not scare my friends and readers who are not into spooky things, and this year I plan on doing the same thing. That being said, I also plan on posting a haiku or limerick based on my Nightmare Fuel post on this blog. That will keep most of the creepy over there, but also keep this place hopping through the month.

There! Housekeeping done. Now, because you put up with this long post about pretty much nothing, here is a (kind of blurry, sorry I need a real camera or scanner) picture I drew! Jenna said she could tell it was me because of the glasses and bat wings…

my to do list is superior to most to do lists…

There are days when things fall together and you realize that your life is perfect.

Just kidding. Those days don’t really exist, because life isn’t perfect, but that’s what makes it worth living. Who wants to wake up to the same, boring, robotic existence every morning? Not I. I choose uncertainty and spice.

That being said…

There are days when things fall together and you realize that somehow, you’ve done something right, and that even if things aren’t perfect, holy crap, they are darn good.

I had one of those days today.

Looking at my to do list I saw this:
-Ink Narwhal
-Post comic
-Finish first draft of blog for Ubokia
-Reply to e-mails
-Revisit Iris story for edits to send to Erik
(Erik’s my buddy and he is a rockin artist… rockin.)

That’s my day. I draw, I comic, and I write.

I have zero complaints about that. Absolutely none.

And now (because you stuck with me to the end of the post), a haiku:

Wishing for power
to change the weather to rain.
Maybe I should dance.

it has been a long time coming…

It has been a long time coming–
right on the edge where disaster meets contentment,
and I can taste victory with a hint of defeat.
The one, the thing controlling the outcome–
(whomever,
whichever, whoever, whatever)
it doesn’t matter. There will be an ending
that matches the beginning.
It will be painful, it will be hard,
and it will be exquisitely unique, and wonderful.
The new, the old, the yet to come
will colide, will explode into passion and color.
I assume you will be there,
holding my head above water,
wrapping me up into you, as we gaze into the nether.
And I assume you won’t mind
when I hold you so tight, that it pulls you under.

My life is changing right now. It’s changing slowly and rapidly all at the same time. Every single change is good. Every single change is wanted, and embraced. However, that does not make them easy, and it does not mean I’m not fighting them just because I think change is scary. I’m going to try and keep up. I’m going to try and put my hopes and my dreams where they belong, and keep my feet on the ground. We’ll see how that goes. Wish me luck! I’m diving in…

that one old adage…

I’m going to give myself and those around me two reminders now… (Notice I am totally included here… I am often so very guilty of everything I am about to say.)

First, you know when you get really angry at a group of people that believe something differently than you do and you start cursing their existence, and questioning their intelligence? No? I’ll give you an example:

“I can’t believe people that like blue Gatorade. Blue is not a flavor. Bluers are just a daft lot of wankers.”

What I just said there, is truth and not truth. I personally do not like blue Gatorade. I personally feel like Blue is not a flavor. My personal feelings, however, become slightly irrelevant when I am willing to start pushing those feelings outside of myself, forcing said feelings onto others, and generalizing about an entire group of people. I’m sure that Bluers are actually, in general, perfectly nice people. In fact, I know a few. Although I disagree with their life-choice in calling blue a flavor, I do not in fact find them to be daft wankers.

You get it, right? Okay. Good.

Second, well… this actually is going to be a bit complicated to piece out. So, you know when you start saying mean things about a group of people or a specific person that you do not actually know and posting said things all over the internet? No? I’ll give you an example:

“So-and-so probably likes to eat brains and kill puppies. He’s a terrible human and I wish he would just drop dead.”

What I just said there, well, it’s terrible! It’s mean! It’s something I would never, ever, ever want my children to read about me on accident while surfing the internet with their buddies. People have names, they have families, they have children, and they deserve respect. Even when you greatly disagree with them, they deserve respect. That doesn’t mean their ideas deserve your respect, it doesn’t mean you have to agree with them, it doesn’t even mean that you have to hang out with them. It just means that it’s important to remember these two things… 1) Don’t write things about others online that you wouldn’t want your parents and/or children to read about you. 2) Remember that someone out there feels the same way about the things you think, and then remember that your truth isn’t everyone’s truth and that their truth isn’t yours.

That is pretty much it. I hope you all have a fantastic day full of sunshine and rainbows and Sonic iced tea.

things i’ve decided to say on a tuesday…

Random bits of important information and advice on life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness, parenting, and electronics.

-I, as a very pale human being of largely German descent, cannot hang at a pool with a Puerto Rican. She will turn a nice shade of brown, and I (even while wearing sunscreen) will turn into a lobster.

-One should never speak/write/proclaim anything as absolute, unwavering truth that is likely to change for them in the near future… we’ll say within a 1-2 year span of time.

-New parents should vacuum, watch an action movie at full volume, or have a dance party to dubstep every time their child takes a nap for the first month or so. Sure, this seems like a bad idea, but eventually it will mean that your child can sleep through the hissy fit you have on the phone with customer service with any of a kazillion annoying companies.

-It is possible to love babies without wanting any.

-Phone booths will never look the same to me since watching Doctor Who. Also, the whirring sound that comes from most air conditioning units and fans causes me to constantly peek around looking for the TARDIS.

-Star Wars will always hold a special place in my heart… however, Han shot first, more cgi does not always equal a more interesting scene, and taking out Darth Vader at the end of Return of the Jedi and replacing him with stupid Anakin Skywalker is lame and I’m super pissed that I know about it.

-Apple is not user friendly. I really never want to hear anyone say that it is again. Steve Jobs built an empire around being as not user friendly as possible. He wanted you to have to go have things fixed for you and explained to you in his stores. That is really uncool. You may not see how uncool it actually is, but it doesn’t change that it is. UNCOOL. (Full disclosure says I should tell you that I’m typing on a MacBook Air and that I had a conversation with an Apple “Genius” today about a settings issue where I was told, “Well, you can bring it in and I can show you how to figure things out. Once you know what you’re doing, you’ll see Macs really are user friendly. It can just take some time to understand computers.” Yeah… umm… no.)

-When it comes to blogging, the best advice I can give is to say this: Don’t expect anyone to read your blog. Do it because you want to and because you enjoy it, but don’t do it because you want internet fame and recognition. Statistically speaking, it just isn’t going to happen. Also, people are generally voyeuristic in nature. A good thing to remember is that people want to feel like they know everything about you, even if they actually do not. So, feed people enough truth that they believe they know you intimately, but hold back enough that you maintain your dignity and privacy.

-It is perfectly okay to have a milkshake for lunch and then to eat chips for dessert.

-Sunshine is overrated. Too much Vitamin D generally makes me feel icky and in need of rain.
