blog a day challenge: z…

Before I get into today’s post… It’s the last day of April, and I seem to have successfully navigated the A-Z challenge! It was fun and I found quite a few new blogs to follow. I hope you guys enjoyed getting to know me a bit better, and that you enjoyed the posts I’ve put up over the past 30 days. I hope you guys stick around now that we’re entering into May! I won’t be posting every day, but I’ll keep things regular around here.

Z is for zephyr…

Turning my head toward the sunset,
the warm breeze kisses my face.
If you were here, it would be your
lips grazing my neck and cheeks,
your gentle fingers tousling my hair.
But you are there, so far away, and I
am waiting for you outside–
standing and watching in the
direction that you will walk when
you come back to me, but for now I
have the wind to keep me company.
I can pretend that it carries with it
your embrace and your voice.
Until we meet again, I will hold the
zephyr dear, and keep you in my heart.

Y is for yarn…

During this challenge I’ve done a post of random facts about me and my life, and a post about things I do not like, I figured it was probably a good idea to also include a post about a few of my favorite things. (You’re all singing the song now right along with me, aren’t you…)

Yarn, especially yarn in piles, or baskets, or on shelves in yarn stores, is one of my favorite things. I like the way it smells, and how it feels as I work with it pulling and pushing with needles or hooks to create something new. I like the way it looks, from different textures, to different colors… I have a yarn buying problem. I’d like to say I’m working on it, but I’m not, and I probably won’t.

I love baseball. The San Francisco Giants are my team, and I love watching them, but I also enjoy the game in general.

Speaking of  SF, if I could live anywhere without having to worry about money, it would be there.

My birthday week is one of my favorite times of year. It’s pretty much the only time I can get away with eating cake multiple times a day for several days in a row without being chastised or called pathetic. Cake? Clearly also one of my favorites. I’m not that particular about the kind. As long as it’s moist and edible, I’m sold.

I often paint my fingernails black. It’s my favorite color. Well, it and purple and grey. They are happy colors. Colors that make me feel warm and safe.

Okay, now for a quick and dirty run down of a few more favorites…
Ben and Jerry’s: Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
Coffee: Vanilla Latte (I’m kinda boring)
Beer: Hefeweizen or Blue Moon or my friend Gordon’s homebrew
Toothpaste: Crest
Fast Food: Tacos!
Place for drinks (nonalcoholic): Sonic
Place to read: Curled up in bed.
Place to write: Curled up in bed.

I have a pair of little, gold, hoop earrings that my mom got me when I was a lot younger than I am now. I wear them all the time and they are pretty much my favorite jewelry.

My first car was a 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon. Nothing will ever beat that car in my eyes. Nothing.

When I think about the place I would like to be on any given day, it is with my friends. I don’t really care where we are, I just like being around them.

Camping, fishing, hiking, and reading in the sun are my favorite outdoor activities.

Finally, I’m a fan of technology and electronics. For instance, I love my android phone and I love that there is an app that stores my Starbucks card and so I can pay with my phone. It’s so awesome!

blog a day challenge: x…

X is for xenagogue

(For those of you not willing to click the link but wondering what a xenagogue is, basically, it is someone who is a guide to strangers.)

Standing still as a statue in the dark,
the scent of moist earth and musty air filling my lungs.
Always waiting, for the next one, the next
person journeying through, the one
unfortunate enough to stumble this way, and to
become a part of this place. Once in, there is no
way out. Not one without consequences.
My purpose, to lead them towards the light,
but even then they may not like what they find.
Not all exits open to a place of comfort, and
not all entrances are to be trusted. Now, as
I wait and wonder who will be the next, my
belly rumbles. It is the anticipation, the thrill
of the unknown and what is about to come.

W is for winter…

The first poem I wrote a while back. The second one I wrote today. I felt like creating something a bit sillier than the first.

Winter (creative title I know… don’t judge. I’m not good at titling things.)

The tiniest lace doilies,
falling from the sky, settling into piles.
Piles blown into swirls, deposited in drifts
so tall they block out the late day sun.
Clear skies bring finches to the feeders.
Animals avoiding hibernation
poke their noses out of holes and bask in the rays.
Everything is brighter and happier
as light glints and reflects in every direction.
Children become dragons puffing
out smoke as they run and play in the chilled air.
Breathing in ice, and a sensations like
pinpricks peppering skin
become commonplace, and easily ignored.
People become more alike
covered in puffy jackets and layers of sweaters.
Gloves cover hands, and hats hide hair
creating the illusion that everyone is essentially the same.

Layers

an excuse to wear
one more shirt, ridicule free
I love cold weather

blog a day challenge: v…

V is for violets, violin, ventricular, void, vandalism, victor, vampires, vitamins, and vagina.

Thanks to my facebook peeps for the help coming up with topics today! Now, without further ado, I present you with several haiku and a political poem.

Violets
violets in pots
winking, smiling, and laughing
on every surface

Violin
sad, sweet melodies
crying tears for memories
now long forgotten

Ventricular
blood thrumming its way
through a winding complex maze
tubes carrying life

Void
I would live in space
if it was like Hubble said
not light years of black

Vandalism
graffiti on walls
shades of the apocalypse
or urban decay

Victor
the spoils go that way
just pile them there in his arms
they’re his problem now

Vampires
tombs full of dead dreams
wish they were mausoleums
housing draculas

Vitamins
without them we die
and yet the pills taste like dirt
not a funny joke

Vagina
it is a dirty word
so says our society
but I call it
my anatomy
some would
have me believe
that it was an
identity
but really
it is just a
small part of me
and a part the world
would like
to control
to put on posters
as political drivel
but it is not a
talking point
and it does not
exist for them
to legislate
it is mine
to do with
as I please
similar to
my eyes, my mouth
and my knees.
